Kisspeptin
Description
Kisspeptin-10 is a C-terminal decapeptide fragment of the KiSS-1 gene product metastin. It is a potent agonist of the GPR54 receptor and plays a central role in the regulation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis. Research applications include studies of reproductive endocrinology and neuroendocrine signaling.
Research Summary
Kisspeptin-10 has been extensively studied in reproductive endocrinology. Research demonstrates its role as the primary upstream regulator of GnRH neurons, with implications for understanding puberty onset, fertility regulation, and hypothalamic-pituitary-gonadal axis modulation. Multiple clinical trials have investigated its diagnostic potential in reproductive disorders.
Mechanism of Action
Binds to and activates the GPR54 (KISS1R) receptor on GnRH neurons in the hypothalamus, triggering the release of gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH). This stimulates luteinizing hormone (LH) and follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) secretion from the anterior pituitary.
